Objective: To promote a remodeled children's book department and to build traffic.

Strategy: The new department, named "A Child's Place," was designed with bright colors, and coordinating fixtures and signs directing customers to children's reading levels. To promote the department, red flying saucers, yo-yo's and helium filled balloons, all imprinted with the department name, were distributed on two successive Saturdays in two test stores in Connecticut. Each child passing by or entering the store received a balloon; the flying saucers and yo-yo's were given at random during peak traffic throughout the two days. The promotion also employed newspaper advertising, posters, costumed characters and special events.

Results: Store traffic was four times greater than that of Saturdays before the promotion. Sales during the promotion in both stores were approximately 50% above the company's average for children's departments, and they remained at a higher-than-average level following the promotion.
